Nominations accepted to honor cancer champions

Individuals can nominate themselves or a cancer survivor, patient, caregiver or advocate for those impacted by cancer as a Breakaway from Cancer Champion.

Five individuals who have made a positive impact and acted as an inspiration to those affected by cancer within their community— one from each of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California communities of Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, Modesto, Paso Robles, and the Conejo Valley (Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills)—will be selected as the champions.

Breakaway from Cancer Champions will be granted special access to the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, will award a jersey to a professional cyclist, will be recognized on stage, and will lead the Breakaway Mile through their community.

The Breakaway Mile takes place at the finish line of the tour to honor the millions of cancer survivors worldwide. The event in the Conejo Valley will take place May 22.

Nominations will be accepted through March 22 and the champions will be notified in late April. The Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partners are Prevent Cancer Foundation; Cancer Support Community, formerly known as The Wellness Community; Patient Advocate Foundation; and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
