Breakfast done right
After paying $14 for an omelet
at a popular deli in Westlake, I
thought it was time to write about a
couple of nice places for breakfast
that are not only good but reasonably
priced.
My first choice is Harold’s Restaurant in Thousand Oaks. Located
across the street from T.O. Toyota,
this local breakfast hangout has
been serving customers since 1961.
It improved greatly when the
current owners took over several
years ago. Though not the most at- tractive restaurant with its vinyl
booths, ’60s wood-paneling and
wallpaper, this neighborhood res
taurant makes up for its decor with
quality food, large portions, reason
able prices and friendly service.
Most of the staff has been work
ing at Harold’s for years. They take
pride in their jobs and make you feel
at home whether you’re a regular
or first-time guest.
When you arrive, plan on wait
ing a few minutes but it won’t be
long because the tables move
quickly. The omelets, their specialty,
are huge and fluffy. Stuffings are not
folded in but buried under the omelet. My favorites are the mushroom
and Swiss cheese, chorizo with jack
cheese and the Spanish omelet with
homemade chunky salsa. With prices
from $7.95 to $8.95 they are a great
bargain and they’re large enough to
be shared by two.
If you are not into omelettes,
Harold’s has terrific pancakes and
waffles. The restaurant offers a full
lunch menu with a large variety of
sandwiches, salads and Mexican
entrées priced from $4.95 to $8.95.
Though they serve dinner starting at 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, I am not sure I could recommend Harold’s for a night on
the town. Harold’s Restaurant is
located at 2440 East Thousand
Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks.
Probably the busiest breakfast
house, and for good reason, is
Eggs “N” Things on Moorpark
Road in Thousand Oaks.
This breakfast and lunch restaurant has been
a popular place
for locals for
many years. Recently remodeled, this
friendly, wellrun restaurant
with all its windows and new
interior colors, is
warm and
cheery. Most of
the servers have
been there for many years and do
an excellent job getting you in
and out. You will never have an
empty coffee cup.
When you are seated you’ll
be served with a complimentary
crêpe with preserves, which is a
great starter while you are looking over the menu. While omelets are made with three eggs,
they are not huge. They are
served with a choice of fresh fruit
or delicious home-style potatoes
and toast, bagel or hot biscuits.
The potatoes are great. Omelets
are $5.75 to $7.75. Can’t beat
that! There is a full breakfast
menu and prices are from $4.95
to $7.75.
Eggs “N” Things also has a
full lunch menu with a variety of
salads, sandwiches and burgers.
With reasonable prices, warm
friendly service and a nice warm
atmosphere, it
is no wonder
that this restaurant has grown
into a chain of
seven locations in the last
several years.
Eggs “N”
Things is located at 1542
Moorpark Rd,
T h o u s a n d
Oaks, (805)
497-1711. Other locations are
in Simi Valley, Camarillo,
Valencia, Ojai, Ventura and
West Hills.
