New Agoura Hills ordinance has nothing to do
with Home Depot

I was very surprised to read letters in The Acorn demanding that the Agoura Hills City Council apologize for accusing Measure H proponents of "dirty tricks" in the last election. I was surprised because it did not happen.

No one on the city council made such a remark. Nor did the city attorney make such a statement. In fact, Measure H, and the two sides in that campaign, were not the subject of discussion and, to my recollection, were never mentioned at all. The term "dirty tricks" was never used by anyone.

Unfortunately, the Acorn article was not accurate. It mischaracterizes the action taken by the council and the reasons for that action.

The council voted to make four changes in the city’s election code to tighten up some possible ambiguities and loopholes. They stipulate that: (1) Candidate contributions to other candidates are subject to the same contribution limits that apply to every other citizen; (2) Contributions "directed by or reimbursed by" an employer would be "aggregated," that is, considered to be contributions from one source, that employer, and subject in total to the same contribution limits; (3) Committees formed for other purposes (PACs), can only make contributions to candidates for city council seats if they collect contributions within the same rules and contribution limits that apply to individuals, and (4) Committees participating in city elections must provide a true and accurate street address of the committee. These are common sense measures that serve to make council elections fair and open, and give no one an unfair advantage.

I urge anyone who wants to know what really happened and what was really said to view the videotape at city hall.

It is important to exercise the right to speak out, but it is equally important to exercise the duty to be well informed. Another reading of the ordinance will be heard at the next council meeting, Feb. 26.

I urge anyone who is interested to be there.

Ed Corridori,

City Councilman

Agoura Hills
