STATE OF THE ART—A recent upgrade to the Leksell Gamma Knife at the Los Robles NeuroScience Gamma Knife Center allows for surgery on brain tumors without incisions or exposing the inside of the skull.

The Los Robles NeuroScience Gamma Knife Center, a leader in the treatment of brain disorders, has recently enhanced its equipment capabilities by installing the Perfexion upgrade to the Leksell Gamma Knife, the standard in the non-invasive treatment of benign and malignant brain tumors, vascular malformations and other functional brain disorders.

“The Perfexion upgrade to our Gamma Knife allows us to provide our patients with faster, safer, and multifaceted treatment,” said neurosurgeon Ron Young, MD, co-director of the center and recognized as a pioneer in the field. “Through our new Perfexion system, we’re now able to offer unparalleled accuracy and precision while enhancing the comfort of our patients requiring Gamma Knife treatment.”

The Los Robles NeuroScience Gamma Knife Center becomes the fourth hospital in Southern California and the sixth in the state to offer this state-of-the-art advancement to its patients.

The Perfexion has set new standards in radiation safety through the ability to treat single and multiple lesions in one treatment session while providing seamless workflow procedures.

The Gamma Knife is actually not a knife, but a medical device that focuses beams of gamma radiation precisely on the abnormal area of the brain with minimal damage to the normal brain tissue surrounding the problem areas.

Since this is noninvasive brain surgery, no surgical incision is made to expose the inside of the brain. This reduces the risk of surgical complications and eliminates the side effects and dangers of general anesthesia.

According to Young, patients experience virtually no discomfort or immediate side effects, and they usually go home the same day, returning to their normal routine.

Founded in 2005, the NeuroScience Gamma Knife Center has treated almost 900 patients affected by benign and malignant brain tumors and other brain disorders, Trigeminal Neuralgia and Essential Tremors.

The center’s veteran staff has performed more than 4,000 procedures using the Leksell Gamma Knife.

The Los Robles Hospital Neuroscience Gamma Knife Center is on the hospital’s main campus at 2200 Lynn Road, Thousand Oaks.
