Nature classes for seniors

Programs about seeds, birds, plants


Mountains Restoration Trust has expanded its educational programs with a series of naturalist classes for seniors.

The Senior Naturalist Program is an opportunity to discover special places within the mountains, learn about nature and meet others who enjoy the outdoors.

Reservations are required. The fee is $10 per person per event.

The MRT Senior Naturalist Program is offered through the Calabasas Community Services Department. Complete class descriptions can be found in the City of Calabasas Recreation Brochure available at www.cityofcalabasas.com/recreation.html.

Following are the winter session classes. All sessions meet on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon.

•Nature 101. Jan. 24 at Headwaters Corner at Calabasas, Masson House, 23075 Mulholland Hwy. Learn about local history.

•Seed Propagation. Feb. 7 at De Anza Park, 3701 Lost Hills Road, Calabasas. Tom Hayduk, restoration specialist, will discuss seed collection, seed cleaning and storage and seed sowing of plant species native to the Santa Monica Mountains.

•Birds. Feb. 21 at Headwaters Corner at Calabasas, Masson House, 23075 Mulholland Hwy.

•Cuttings Propagation Workshop. March 6 at Founders Hall, 100 Civic Center Way, Calabasas. Tom Hayduk will discuss basic cutting propagation methods of California native plants. Species for propagation may include sticky monkey flower, crimsonfl owered pitcher sage and woolly blue curls.

•Native American Culture. Tues., March 20 at Headwaters Corner at Calabasas, Masson House, 23075 Mulholland Hwy.

Learn about the Native American Indians that lived in the Santa Monica Mountains. There will be a walk-about and discussion on different native plants, rocks, bones.

•Cold Creek Valley Preserve Walk-About. Tues., March 27 at City Hall, 100 Civic Center Way, Calabasas. Participants will take a 10-minute shuttle ride to the Cold Creek Valley Preserve. Seniors will walk beside a creek, beneath oaks and streamside trees, and stroll by plants and flowers.
