The San Fernando Valley branch of the California Writers Club meeting will take place at 1 p.m. Sat., March 2 in the Saban Community Room on the Motion Picture and TV Fund campus, 23388 Mulholland Drive, Woodland Hills.

Award-winning former Motown lyricist K.A. Parker will present “What it Takes to be a Great Lyricist.”

Parker has written songs for Juice Newton, Gloria Loring and George Duke as well as for TV shows including “Felicity.”

During her presentation, Parker, also a master teacher, writer, lecturer and producer, will conduct a lyric writing exercise and play some of her best-known songs, which have also been recorded by Sylvia Vartan, Roger Whitaker and Grammy Award-winner Darlene Koldenhoven.

“Love is An Action Word,” “They Don’t Make Love Like They Used To,” “Nobody’s Fool Anymore” and “Keepin’ It Up,” are among the award-winning 40 songs she is credited with writing.

Parker has won awards in more than 26 songwriting competitions and written more than 30 articles for music business publications. She has served on the faculties of UCLA Extension, the Musicians Institute, the Grove School and Golden West College.

Prior to Parker’s presentation, author Rita Keeley-Brown (“Good Luck Mrs. Brown”) will lead a 20-minute workshop titled “Just Write.” Attendees will be asked to write a brief story based on one of four prompts.

The California Writers Club welcomes writers in all genres. Guests attending the monthly meeting will be asked to donate $10. For more information, visit cwc-sfv.org.
