Meeting on pickleball dispute

The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District announced a meeting for 6:30 p.m. Thurs., May 2 at the Oak Park Community Center to hear further input from the public regarding the shared usage of tennis and pickleball courts in the community.

The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District voted Feb. 21 to convert two tennis courts at Deerhill Park into pickleball-only courts, but a vocal reaction from the tennis community led the district to rethink its decision.

Due to the growing popularity of pickleball, the Deerhill courts were painted for use by both sports in 2016.

Rancho Simi operates six tennis courts in Oak Park, two at each of its three parks: Deerhill, Mae Boyar and Indian Springs.

The park district decided to postpone its decision to convert the Deerhill courts to pickleball until after next month’s meeting.

“Until that time, users of the courts are encouraged to cooperatively share courts as they have been over the past couple of years,” the Rancho Simi park district said in a statement.

Input prior to the meeting can be sent to Nikki@rsrpd.us.

In preparation for the May 2 meeting, interested parties are also encouraged to think about suggested solutions and ideas to share with the district,” the statement said. The Oak Park Community Center is at 1000 Kanan Road.
