Maritime museum dives into submarine exhibit

The Ventura County Maritime Museum will present the exhibit "Submarines in the Age of Sail, 1580 to 1900" through April 6.

The museum is on Fisherman’s Wharf, 2731 S. Victoria Ave., Oxnard.

The exhibit features early submarine designs reproduced in drawings, photographs and models.

Visitors will see underwater vessels propelled by hand cranks and foot-driven treadmills and lighted by candles. George Washington approved using the Turtle, a submarine built in 1776, to attach a mine to the British flagship, HMS Eagle, in an attempt to sink it.

Irish-American John Holland built submarines powered by gasoline engines that the U.S. Navy began to adopt in 1897.

The museum and its gift shop are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
