Marc Tyler or Darrell Scott, who’s the better college football prospect?

Acorn Newspapers editors Kyle Jorrey and Stephen Dorman debate which running back has the most skills

No offense to Mr. Scott, a super-talented high school running back in his own right, but Oaks Christian’s Marc Tyler-like the Lions themselves-is on another level.

After all, No. 26 is far from just the best back in Ventura County. For my money-and I’ve watched him since he was still sharing carries with the talented Aaron Ware-he’s the best in the nation.

And the sports writers over at Rivals.com and ESPN.com and countless other football recruiting websites seem to agree. Tyler and his NFL genes lead just about every list of top prep running back prospects you can find on the Web.

But never mind what so-called experts might think of him, Tyler’s record on the field speaks loud enough.

If we want to talk about statistics, there’s no comparison. With 121 career touchdowns and counting, the USC-bound Tyler ranks third on the state’s all-time list, this despite the fact that he’s seen less action in the fourth quarter than the halftime band.

Ever since his freshman year-when he averaged 7.5 yards a carry and scored 16 touchdowns-the 215-pound, 6-foot-1 back has made the most of every single carry he gets, because compared to most other premier backs, he doesn’t get many.

Can he succeed at the collegiate level? Please. Tyler plays like a man amongst boys. Mark my words, he’s ready to start for the Trojans. Tomorrow.

And don’t give me this “He hasn’t played against any good competition” line, either. Tyler has beaten, and beaten badly, any defense that’s been put in front of him.

Just ask St. Bonnie, who was riding a wave of 27 straight wins until Tyler lit them up to the tune of 271 yards and five TDs in a 59-13 victory-a wipeout that only a surfer of Dorman’s caliber could truly respect.

Add all I’ve said to the fact that he plays defense and has to share the spotlight with the nation’s topranked quarterback, and it gets to be ridiculous.

No disrespect to Darrell, but it’s Marc we’ll be enjoying first on Saturdays.
