Rose Mary Manninger, the head of the payroll department for Las Virgenes Unified School District, was named the district’s 2011 Classified Employee of the Year at the Sept. 13 school board meeting.

Karen Kimmel, chief business official, spoke about Manninger’s history with the district.

Manninger joined LVUSD as a secretary in the attendance office of Calabasas High School in 1990. In 1996 she moved to the district office as a payroll account clerk.

When the state Workers’ Compensation Administration opened in 2003, Manninger took on the paperwork involved.

“Rosie has since taken care of our employees who have been injured at work, making sure they receive appropriate care and that all forms and reports are prepared within timelines,” Kimmel said.

When the lead payroll specialist retired in 2009, Manninger was promoted.

“Rosie once again stepped up to the plate and took on these additional responsibilities, providing invaluable leadership and guidance to the payroll department,” Kimmel said.

Payroll supervisor Kristen Pifko said many changes have occurred in the department since Manninger took the helm, including unpaid days off for employees due to budget constraints, new retirement reporting requirements and new methods of delivering a variety of services.

“Throughout all that no one even noticed” any disruption, Pifko said. “That’s how well Rosie did her job.”

Board president Jill Gaines called Manninger a treasure to the district.

Manninger was moved by the honor and thanked everybody for the recognition. She reminisced about her first week at Calabasas High School, which started after spring break.

“I had not worked in a high school before,” she said.

Since many students had taken time off before spring break, Manninger was shocked at the long attendance line when school resumed.

“By nutrition I thought, what the heck did I get myself into,” Manninger said.

But the high school turned into a home-away-from-home for Manninger. She built rela- tionships with teachers, staff, students and parents.

Kimmel said one of Manninger’s favorite slogans is, ‘I am the queen of everything.’

“Considering all she does for LVUSD, I would have to agree,” Kimmel said.
