A 20-year-old man was arrested early yesterday after his mother, a high school teacher, was found stabbed to death in her Calabasas home.

Deputies believe Jesse Winnick called his sister
around
11 p.m. Tues., Sept. 25, confessing that he had just killed their mother, 55-year-old Hadas Winnick. The sister rushed to the house and called the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

When deputies arrived at the home in the 3800 block of Declaration Avenue near Mulholland Highway in Calabasas, they found Hadas Winnick with several stab wounds to her upper torso, said Edmundo Hummel, a sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Winnick was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Lt. Gil Carrillo of the L.A. County Sheriff’s homicide division.

The woman’s son fled the Calabasas home, but deputies soon located his car nearby. They spotted him leaving his vehicle and entering another. Deputies followed the second car, which was driven by someone else, initiated a traffic stop and arrested the suspect as he attempted to hide in the back seat, according to a sheriff’s report.

Winnick was booked at the Lost Hills station on murder charges early Wednesday morning.

The driver of the vehicle was questioned, but charges against him are not expected to be filed.

Hadas Winnick was a longtime teacher at Canoga Park Senior High School. According to her website, she had been a math teacher in middle school and high school for more than 30 years and was currently teaching an Algebra 1 class.

No motive for the killing was given.
