Man critically injured during alleged drug deal

Authorities say a 19-year-old Calabasas man remains in critical condition at UCLA Medical Center following an incident last week in which he was run over by a vehicle during an apparent foiled drug deal.

John Barron, a resident of Parkmor Road in Calabasas, was allegedly selling marijuana to a man and a girl inside a truck when the couple sped away in an attempt to steal the drug.

Reaching inside to retrieve the marijuana, Barron fell to the pavement and was run over by the rear wheel of the truck, according to the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

The incident occurred the evening of Mon., March 18 in the 26300 block of Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

Two Calabasas residents, Corey Dennis, 23, and a 17-year-old female were taken into custody a few hours later.

"These people did not have the funds and it actually was going to be just a marijuana rip off," said Sgt. Phil Morris. "A $20 bag of marijuana—that’s what we’re talking about."

Morris said Barron was rushed to the hospital with massive head injuries and remained in critical condition earlier this week.

Members of the sheriff’s Juvenile Intervention Team found Dennis asleep in his truck near the scene of the crime and arrested the girl a short time later.

"There was a witness that saw the juvenile and the adult leaving the area when the body was found in the street," said Tim Cooley, a Juvenile Team deputy. "The witness knew who they were," he said.

Cooley said Dennis is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony hit and run. The girl also faces assault charges.

"I don’t know where it’s going to go from here, but these kids have got to wake up," Cooley said.
