Malibou Lake has alternate routes

Your recent article regarding the bridge closure at Malibou Lake was inaccurate. There are still multiple routes out of Malibou Lake despite the bridge closure. In fact, you can see another bridge over Medea Creek from the closed bridge and it can be accessed using a paved unnamed access road behind the Malibou Lake Club House adjacent to the closed bridge.

Besides Lake Vista Drive, there are two other exit routes (High Point and Sugar Loaf drives). While all these exits have some problems such as being narrow and winding (or unpaved, in the case of Sugar Loaf), these private roads would be available in the event of a firestorm emergency, and the community should be aware that they exist.

Also, I would like to question if we need to reopen the closed bridge at all. Do we really need to have two bridges within sight of each other over the same small body of water?

The bridge closure has had some very positive benefits on our neighborhood. Lake Vista Drive is a narrow and winding residential street frequently used by pedestrians, bicyclists and speeding vehicles. This is a deadly combination and no doubt the greatest realistic threat to public safety in our community. The bridge closure has had a great calming effect on our typically high-speed traffic. Leaving the bridge permanently closed will make Malibou Lake a safe, more pleasant community.

I urge all the dog walkers, bicyclists and nature lovers to send our L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky an e-mail urging permanent closure of the bridge at zev@bos.co.la.ca.us. No offense intended to those who don’t like the bridge being closed. I realize that I am in the minority living on Lake Vista Drive.
