Lowe’s pays to play

Lowe’s has set aside $500,000 to make an end run around the Westlake City Council and get Proposition Z passed. This is mind-boggling for our little vil- lage and we should all convey to Lowe’s that we do not want our village to turn into the San Fernando Valley.

The advertising is devious, de- ceptive and not true. It is easy to refute their falsehoods by looking at the environmental impact re- port (which Lowe’s paid for):

“Traffic, Section 3.2.2: 8,690 new daily vehicle trips that will be generated by the proposed retail center.

“Air Quality, Section 3.2.7: The proposed project would significantly impact air quality due to long-term generation of NOx, ROG, and CO.

“Noise, Section 3.5: Delivery/ unloading of heavy goods using a forklift, refuse collection or parking lot sweeping, or stacking or retrieval of temporary outdoor storage. Early morning truck traffic could also be a nuisance.

“Sheriff Response, Section 3.6.2: Centers of this type cause an increase in the number of calls requiring po- lice response, and increased demand for traffic, law, and parking lot en- forcement, and increased accident response, and increases in the num- ber of burglaries and thefts.

“Parking Spaces, Section 3.7.3: Only 985 parking spaces are pro- posed. Therefore, the site will have 207 fewer parking spaces than are required by the city’s Municipal Code.”

Proponents claim that Lowe’s will bring in $650,000 more than an office park. Do we want to sell out our way of life for $650,000 when the city has millions of dollars in re- serve?

The size and colors of Lowe’s signs are not consistent with prior city standards. Lowe’s would be al- lowed to erect signs along the 101 Freeway and a freestanding (5-by- 7-foot) directional sign at Valley Oaks Cemetery.

Vote “no” on Z and get your friends and neighbors to spread the word. Our village is being threatened by a huge corporation which does not care about traffic, air quality, extra car trips, city ordinances, aesthetics or noise, and worst of all, they are writing the law for their own benefit.
