So this was it—a chance meeting between a bumbling bashful California newcomer asking to see a map of local hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains and the library clerk in charge of topography who brought out rolls and rolls of area maps.
"What are you looking for exactly?" he asked. He was tall and gentlemanly with unkempt longish dark hair and an equally unkempt wardrobe.
