Local real estate agents and Conejo Valley restaurants are participating in an April effort to raise funds for research into a rare cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, one that has afflicted a 2017 Westlake High School graduate over the past year.
Participating Realtors will donate a portion of their commissions from every sale they complete during April.
Restaurant nights will take place in Westlake at BJ’s (Wed., April 4), Sea Casa (Mon., April 9), Jersey Mike’s (Sat., April 21) and Sharky’s (Wed., April 25).
The fundraiser will culminate with a poker tournament Sat., April 28 at The Hit Factory Baseball Academy, a player-development facility in Newbury Park.
Monies from the fundraiser, Bring Home a Cure for Connor MacLea, will support research being done by Dr. Jason Sicklick, a specialist at the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.
All proceeds will go directly to the UC San Diego Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funding for the Moores Cancer Center.
Sicklick is treating the 18-year-old, who was a D-1 college-bound baseball player at Westlake High last season before being diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor last winter. MacLea is one of about 35 people nationwide who are being treated for this uncommon cancer.
