Local golf pro falls short in U.S. Open qualifying bid

Steve Holmes got what most competitors received at last week’s U.S. Open sectional qualifying in Northern California: rounds of golf at two beautiful, demanding courses, but no ticket to this week’s 112th Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Only seven invitations—out of a qualifying field of 130—were up for grabs. It took some scintillating play to survive the 36-hole grind on Mon. June 4.
