Local drug, overdose deaths decrease for first time in three years

But pandemic may cause spike in substance abuse

For the first time in three years, Ventura County deaths resulting from drugs or alcohol have decreased, according to the county medical examiner’s 2019 overdose report.
The medical examiner’s office reported 149 deaths—equaling one death every 2½ days—in Ventura County last year, 21 fewer overdose deaths than in 2018. Released in September, the report breaks down overdose deaths by substance, age and city.
