Local artist gives viewers ‘pop of spring’

When most 6-year-olds were scribbling in their coloring books, Steve Stein was displaying his paintings at the Chicago Art Institute.

That was back in 1941, and Stein, now a Westlake Village resident, is still going strong as an artist. He’s showing off his latest creations in a pop-up show called “Pop of Spring” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sun. and Mon., April 8 and 9 at Vincitore Italian Restaurant, 5869 Kanan Road, Agoura Hills. Refreshments will be served.

“Universally, spring is a season for renewal of the earth and the spirit,” Stein said. “I have tried to represent that optimism and love of life in my work, which I am anxious to show at the exhibit.”

In his work, Stein uses oil pastels, acrylics, felt pen and other art materials.

His paintings can be seen in the homes of film stars and musicians and on the walls of corporate boardrooms.

Stein describes himself as an artist of “cheerful proportions.”

“I am fulfilled when I paint in my own primitive, impressionistic style,” he said. “Either consciously or unconsciously, I am expressing all the happy and humorous events that I see around me.”

Stein moved to the Conejo Valley in 1966. Along with Joan, his wife of 55 years, Stein has raised two boys and a girl who matriculated through the Oak Park school system.
