The Woodland Hills Woman’s Club hosted its 50th annual Spelling Bee on Feb. 22 at St. Bernardine’s Parish Center. More than 90 students in the third, fourth and fifth grades from eight schools competed.

The club members presented all winners with medals and small cash awards.

The spelling bee winners are as follows:

Third grade: Gold medal, Ohr Ohana (Woodland Hills Private School); silver medal, Kyle Sardo (Viewpoint School), and bronze medal, Lincoln Stibel ( Viewpoint School).

Fourth grade: Gold medal, Michael Cyrus Barin (Viewpoint School); silver medal, Olivia Mathew (Woodland Hills Private School), and bronze medal, Noah Max Boock (Viewpoint School).

Fifth grade: Gold medal, Neeka Mehran ( Viewpoint School), silver medal, Emma Kyber (St. Mel School), and bronze medal, Alexander Ong (Viewpoint School).

Michael Barin won first place among the fourth-graders by spelling the word “occasionally” correctly.

“ It’s the first time my son won something that he worked hard toward,” said his mother,Violet Barin.

Neeka Mehran, also a firstplace winner, squeezed the spelling bee into her schedule that included a piano lesson.

Her mom, Maryam Mehran, thinks that the main reason Neeka is good with spelling is “that she reads a lot.”
