Lindero ramp receives makeover

The Highway 101 northbound on-ramp widening at Lindero Canyon Road will begin in four to six weeks. The Westlake Village City Council unanimously approved a $4.7-million bid from a Valencia construction company, C.A. Rasmussen.

The project had been postponed while the city investigated whether it could obtain federal economic stimulus funds. Rather than hold off on the project to meet federal requirements, city officials decided to move forward without federal assistance.

All of the 12 bids the city received, with the exception of one, came in under the estimate of $6.9 million. The bid the city accepted is more than $2 million less.

“So much diligence was done on trying to get the federal stimulus funds,” Councilmember Philippa Klessig said. “We’re better to take, at this point, the $2-million-plus reduction than hold out for a possible $300,000 to $500,000 in stimulus funds, which, what I gather, is all that a small city can get.”

The on ramp will be widened to two lanes. Lindero Canyon Road leading up to the ramp in front of the Four Seasons Hotel will be widened as well to allow for two right-turn lanes at the Via Colinas intersection.

The highway ramp is part of a multiphase road improvement program. Two other phases still to be completed are improvements at Lindero Canyon and Agoura roads, and to the overpass bridge at Lindero Canyon Road.

Traffic control during construction will include signs with the start and end dates of construction as well as concrete barriers that will remain in place full time.

Councilmember Sue McSweeney expressed confidence in the contractor who was chosen.

“This is a big contract,” McSweeney said. “This is a contractor that we do know. I have comfort that C.A. Rasmussen will be cooperative with the city and that this will be as painless as possible.”
