Liberals need conservatives

Wayne gets up at 6 a.m. in the morning and fills his coffeepot with water. Wayne thinks that the water is clean and good because some "tree-hugging liberal" fought for minimum quality standards. Otherwise, as Wayne knows well, the water company’s sole purpose would be to poison its customers.

When he takes his medication, drives his car or eats his food, he credits some "commie liberal" for ensuring that it is safe. Wayne knows that otherwise, the pharmaceutical companies, the automotive or the food industry would only be interested in manufacturing products that kill, poison or injure their customers. It’s the best way to maximize profits, after all.

Wayne has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits and holidays "thanks to some liberal union worker." Otherwise, Wayne knows that the best way for his employer to attract skilled workers like himself is to treat them like slaves and not offer any benefits.

Wayne also loves all those free things such as free schools, free healthcare, free loans, free insurance, free retirement and other free subsidies, and he believes that all Americans should give up a greater share of their income to get more free things. After all, Wayne knows that we all need those "big government liberals" since the most efficient way to allocate scarce resources, goods or services is through centralized government and regulations.

We can’t trust the market or people to do what’s right. Wayne can see that throughout history countries that have espoused a centralized government system and a socialist economic model have provided their citizens with higher lifestyles, more opportunities and, in the end, greater freedoms than America has.

After thinking about all of it, Wayne, we don’t need those evil capitalists. Of all the things that you and your family enjoy every day—your car, your cappuccino, your bank, your Macintosh computer—these are all products from government planners, not capitalist entrepreneurs.

And you know what?

Most of them were invented or perfected in America, because it is the most regulated and unionized nation on earth.
