Letter got flagged

Predictably, those rebutting my letter regarding flag desecration appear to have missed the point. It is because I love that for which the flag stands that I object to its commercialization and although I used humor to make my points, the implications of amending the Constitution are ominous.

One letter writer even admitted to calling the businessman who placed the flag on her lawn, proving that the hackneyed annual Fourth of July promo is at least as efficient a marketing tool as notepads, calendars or refrigerator magnets.

My other point was that the American flag is not just a logo but actually stands for something, that being freedom. It is the height of incongruity for Congress to honor the flag by removing a freedom, even the freedom to be stupid and distasteful.

I see no evidence that our current Congress possesses the wisdom demonstrated by our founding fathers and in a nation in which health care is an national disgrace, it is little consolation to know that we are safe from homosexuals and burning flags. Given their demonstrable aptitude I would prefer that they leave the Constitution as written.

Those who would think it is in good taste to use the flag for personal business promotion would do well to observe it on the cover of the July 20 Acorn draped over the coffin of Lance Cpl. Alex Arredondo. God bless him and may he rest in peace. Larry Brown Agoura Hills
