The University of Judaism will host a contingent of writers responsible for television’s most cutting-edge humor in a panel discussion at 2 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 17 at 15600 Mulholland Drive, Bel Air. The event, "The Serious Side of Laughter," will be moderated by Howard Rosenberg, television critic for the Los Angeles Times.


Writers include Phil Rosenthal, creator/executive producer/writer of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and Larry Wilmore, creator/executive producer of "The Bernie Mac Show" who previously was co-producer of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and was a staff writer on "In Living Color." They’ll be joined by Judd Apatow, creator of "Undeclared" and "Freaks and Geeks," and Sam Simon, an award-winning writer/producer/director whose hits range from "Taxi" to "The Simpsons."


Rosenberg and the panelists will consider the current art and business of creating comedy shows and the future direction of comedy on television. They will also discuss "the Jewish style" of humor and the reasons for its strong influence on television comedy.
