Kudos for community service

California State University Channel Islands was recently named to the president’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in recognition for its community service, civic engagement and service-learning.

The university has received the honor for six consecutive years and, for the first time, was recognized “with distinction” for making effective use of federal funding and demonstrating that the campus projects had a measurable impact on the region.

These campus volunteer and service learning projects included: the University Culture Outreach Initiative, which involved CSUCI students mentoring high school students; a service learning group that documented the impact of the 2015 Refugio Oil Spill; and nursing and communication students organizing a pop-up “Street Store” in Oxnard for low-income and homeless visitors.

More than half of the university’s student body served 218,852 hours in 2014-15.
