A Pacoima resident died Aug. 22 when his car went over an embankment on Kanan Road in the Santa Monica Mountains north of Malibu.

Jose Martinez Olmos, 24, was driving alone north on Kanan Road toward Agoura around noon last Wednesday when he tumbled over an embankment near tunnel No. 3.

As there were no other vehicles involved in the accident, it’s unclear what caused Olmos to veer off the road, the California Highway Patrol said.

His car came to a halt 100 feet down the embankment. He died at the scene from his injuries.

Highway Patrol officers were aided in recovering Olmos’ body by members of the Malibu Search and Rescue Team, Los Angeles County Fire Department and L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators are waiting for an autopsy and toxicology report on Olmos’ body to determine if he was impaired at the time of the incident.
