Jewish Arbor Day festival scheduled

Chabad of the Conejo and the Jewish Journal will jointly sponsor "The Green Party—A Jewish Arbor Day Festival" at 2 p.m. Sun., Feb. 8 at the Conejo Jewish Academy, 30345 Canwood St., Agoura Hills.

The celebration will include hands-on art projects, cooking classes, plantings of saplings, music, a buffet of fruits from Israel and a fruit-carving workshop. The projects and workshops are geared for all ages.

The holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, is the day that marks the beginning of the Biblical "New Year for Trees." This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the land of Israel emerge from their winter dormancy and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. The festival is traditionally celebrated by eating fruit, particularly those from the Holy Land.

The festival is open to the community free of charge.
