It’s a dog day afternoon




In honor of National Dog Day, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will host the fifth annual Trails ’n’ Tails for pet owners and their four-legged pals from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Aug. 23 at the garden, 1212 Mission Canyon Road.

Visitors with a leashed dog will receive one free admission.

Activities include: a photo contest, dog vendors with free giveaways, training demos by the Santa Barbara Humane Society, doggie prize raffle, doggie docent tours and doggie hike, Santa Barbara Police Department K-9 demonstration and dog adoptions.

New this year will be a presentation by the City of Santa Barbara, Creeks Division, about the negative impact dog waste has on the watershed and the importance of cleaning up after dogs.

Visitors can pose for the “Who’s That Doggie in the Garden” photo contest. The winning dog will be the face of Trails ’n’ Tails 2015.

A trained volunteer will lead a special botanical dog hike.

Staff from Advanced Veterinary Specialists will be on site to teach about pet first aid.

Raffle prizes will be awarded, including certificates for dog grooming and pet medical care, a dog toy gift basket, and doggie clothing. Drawing tickets are $5 each or three for $10. Winners need not be present to win.

Attendance is limited; only 205 people can be allowed into the garden at one time. Visitors are encouraged to use public transportation via MTD bus number 22. All dogs must be on leash to enter the garden.
