For the past 20 years, Norma Callero of Thousand Oaks has served on the board of the Triunfo Sanitation District. She hopes that on Nov. 7 voters will give her a sixth term.

“I have enjoyed working with Triunfo Sanitation,” said Callero, who is the chair of the fivemember board. “We are from all over the county, we have different opinions, but we run a good operation.”

A 30-year resident of the Conejo Valley, Callero became interested in water issues after learning about anticipated shortages in the state. She developed and gave a presentation to the League of Women Voters on the issue and the need to use reclaimed water to keep golf courses, school playing fields, parks and roadside medians green.

“We also provide safe and reliable drinking water,” Callero said. “We are doing something good for the community.”

Callero sidestepped the subject of the recent discovery of problems with Triunfo’s investment and checking accounts.

“I prefer not to say anything about our finances,” Callero said.

During her two decades with the district, Callero helped implement the recycled water project in Lake Sherwood and Oak Park and was involved in the purchase of Oak Park Water from the Metropolitan Water District.

‘”There are a lot of things in the pipeline,” Callero said. “Hopefully we can work positively together to accomplish these things.”

Over the years, Callero has seen big changes in the area due to growth.

“All the people, all the cars coming in have placed a greater demand on water services and all services,” Callero said. “It’s a challenge we’ll have to meet.”

In addition to her role with Triunfo, Callero is employed at the Thousand Oaks Library as manager of its volunteer program and gift shop, and as a grant writer. She has been with the library for more than 20 years.

“I enjoy the people and the books,” said Callero, an avid reader whose current choice is “The World Is Flat,” by Thomas L. Friedman.

Callero is on the board of Senior Concerns, active in the Conejo Future Foundation, and a past president of the Westlake Women’s Club. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado and a master’s in public administration from California Lutheran University.

“Norma is extremely honest, very reliable and well organized. She’s experienced and has worked to get ratepayers the very best service available,” said her friend, Dianna Campbell, a resident in the Conejo Valley for 30 years.

Originally from Colorado, for years Callero moved around the country because her former husband was in the military and was often transferred. When the family lived in Washington, D.C., Callero worked as a tour guide in the capital. She moved to Thousand Oaks when her husband was transferred here.

She has three children and six grandchildren.

“I love this area,” Callero said. “It’s such a good community.”
