In favor of the editorial

On behalf of the Heschel West Board of Directors, the faculty, families, students and the community that supports us, I want to express our great appreciation for your reasoned editorial about our school project.

As you stated, we have truly spent years designing and redesigning a school that will be compatible with our neighbors and yet be a wonderful asset to the city of Agoura Hills and the Conejo Valley. Even without any real hope that we could moderate the stance of our strident opponents, we have made so many changes and incorporated so many design elements to show our good faith and determination to be good neighbors.

We join in your desire for compromise, but it takes two sides who respect each other to make that kind of progress. So far, all of our efforts to be respectful and accommodate concerns have been rebuffed and met with the response, “go away, there is nothing to discuss.” We sincerely hope that your editorial may inspire a spirit of compromise. We hope that the Agoura City Council’s recent support of dialogue and problem solving can moderate the rhetoric.

We are good people trying to do a good thing. We are members of this community, just as much as Old Agoura. We have sound plans to mitigate the traffic impacts of our school and have agreed to install a variety of traffic improvements at our own expense that will improve conditions over what they are today. We have acted responsibly and respectfully.

We hope that Old Agoura respects the message being conveyed by The Acorn and the city council.

Responsibly developing a community is hard work and we continue to be hopeful that our project will proceed in a spirit of cooperation and neighborliness.

Roger Bloxberg President-elect Heschel West
