In favor of school water sports

Due to the poor financial position of the state of California, the annual schools operating budget has decreased significantly and cuts must be made. But why cut the most successful athletic programs the school has?

Over the past 10 years the aquatics program at AHS has won 18 varsity league titles, three CIF championships and was in the finals three other times. In that same period of time all the other sports on the Agoura High School campus have combined for three varsity league titles and one CIF finals appearance. There are currently more student-athletes playing water polo at the collegiate level than from all the sports on the campus combined.

Budgets are being tightened across the nation at every level, and every day difficult decisions are being made. But terminating the best sports program in the school system and closing the pools forever seems to many a rash choice at best. A solution must be found to continue the aquatics programs, and LVUSD must allow the time and resources for that solution to be decided.

Study after study shows the huge upside of sports programs in schools and the horrific and long-term downside from removing these programs. Should we stop teaching English because the children already speak it?

A group of concerned students and parents have started a grass-roots campaign to save the pools. If you are asked in the next few weeks to sign a petition or make a phone call, please consider schools without sports and the students that would be without them.

Please help us help our schools help our kids become exceptional adults.
