Hospice volunteer training to begin

Nonprofit Hospice of the Conejo will offer its eight-week community volunteer training program from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 19 through Nov. 7 at Los Robles Hospital, 215 W. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

This educational program will prepare individuals to deal compassionately with end-of-life issues for the terminally ill and their loved ones.

Volunteers can also assist professional therapists in grief support groups.

Also included in the training is a segment for those interested in volunteering with the No One Dies Alone program. NODA is a service provided by Hospice of the Conejo in partnership with Los Robles Hospital.

Through NODA, volunteers provide a supportive bedside presence for a dying patient who would otherwise be alone in their final hours. NODA training is offered as either a stand-alone program or in conjunction with the full Hospice Volunteer Training Program.

Volunteers maintain close ties with clients and their families during the final stages of life. Volunteers are there to to listen, run errands, or provide a respite for a family member.

Volunteers also remain with the family and friends after their loved one has died to provide bereavement support.

Some volunteers assist in an on-going grief support groups, help out in the hospice office, or participate in special projects.
