Calabasas officials recently recognized retiring Sgt. Philip Brooks for his 32 years of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Brooks began his career in 1983, working at the Men’s Central Jail for three years. He then transferred to patrol assignments at the Lenox, Alta Dena and Placentia valley sheriff’s stations.

Upon being promoted to sergeant in 1997, Brooks worked at the North County correctional facility and in West Hollywood. He came to the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station in Calabasas in 2001.

Brooks grew up in Glendale. He graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and worked in the field for several years before joining the sheriff’s department.

He and his wife live in Thousand Oaks. They have six children and two grandchildren.

The City Council congratulated the sergeant on his retirement and thanked him for his service.

“I thank you for all you do, as well as the sheriff’s department, to keep us safe,” Councilmember David Shapiro said.

Councilmember Mary Sue Maurer said Brooks’ engineering background helped the city solve traffic problems, particularly around schools and other locations.

Among other things, Brooks came up with the entrance and exit at A.C. Stelle Middle School, she said.

“We can never do enough to thank our sheriff’s (deputies) and firefighters,” Councilmember Fred Gaines said, adding that Brooks and other first responders work closely with the community. “We’re greatly appreciative of what you’ve done to keep our city safe,” Gaines said.

“It’s been my pleasure being of service here,” Brooks said.
