Home at last

To those of us living in Agoura Hills, nature calls when we least expect it.

On a recent Friday morning, my wife and I jumped into our car and drove down Pacific Coast Highway in the direction of Orange County. The expected flow of heavy traffic on the 405 Freeway southbound didn’t surprise us. But an accident south of Irvine slowed the traffic to a stop-and-go crawl for hours.

Upon driving back to Agoura Hills in the afternoon, the traffic was unbelievable and the trip took another three hours.

I was very happy to return home and be greeted by the Santa Monica Mountains, nature and open space.

Saturday morning I awoke to a beautiful day. I glanced out the front door and noticed that the wall fountain in the patio was low on water. There were a few drops sputtering out of the nozzle.

I grabbed a pail of water and began pouring it into the fountain before the pump stopped altogether. Suddenly, the fountain started pumping water out in a steady stream when out of nowhere a florescent green object appeared 18 inches in front of my face.

It was a hummingbird and it flew without wavering, sipping water for 20 seconds and quickly darted away after satisfying its thirst.

I’ll take the natural environment anytime over the urban life.
