High school performers, artists, may earn awards

The Music Center is calling on talented Southern California high school performers, artists and photographers to apply for the 15th annual Music Center Spotlight Awards.

High school performers audition in the categories of ballet, non-classical dance, classical voice, non-classical voice, classical instrumental and jazz instrumental before professional judges who select semifinalists. Semifinalists then attend master classes and audition to become finalists.

The 12 performance finalists—two from each category—will compete at the annual Spotlight Awards on Tues., April 22 at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. Winners receive $5,000 and runnersup receive $2,500.

The visual arts categories are photography (black and white, color and digital) and two-dimensional design (works of art with height and width but no depth, using drawing, painting or mixed media). Visual arts semifinalists also attend master classes. Winners receive $1,500; runners-up $1,000.

Mailed applications include a $10 fee; online registration is free. Non-classical voice must be postmarked by Oct. 1; all other performance category applications must be received online or postmarked by Oct. 8. Visual arts applications must be received online or be postmarked by Nov. 15.
