good neighbor

Thank you for your coverage of the release of the Heschel West Dayschool environmental impact report. We fully agree that the community’s best interests will be served by keeping to the facts and working towards "an equitable conclusion," but our experience with certain vocal members of the Old Agoura Homeowners’ Association is that they made up their minds to oppose our school before the facts were ever even presented to them.

Despite the rhetoric and hyperbole that has been cast our way, we have worked hard over the past few years to incorporate numerous design measures to ensure that our school does not adversely impact our neighbors.

Many of these measures were discussed in your article.

Traffic has always been the key issue, and we have fully addressed and mitigated any impacts. Our school will not add to the Agoura High traffic peaks. We start later in the morning. We’ve located our entrance outside Old Agoura, right next to the freeway. We’ve agreed to install a traffic signal at the freeway intersection, which everyone knows is currently overcrowded and dangerous. The EIR clearly shows that these measures not only address our own school traffic, but will also dramatically improve existing traffic congestion that has nothing to do with our school.

The naysayers in Old Agoura do not have a monopoly on defining what is good for the community, nor do they speak for all of Old Agoura, much less the rest of the city and surrounding communities. Heschel West is part of the community.

Our families live here, many in Old Agoura itself. It is the very mission of the school to build values and build community. We are certain that, after all the "contentiousness" foreshadowed by The Acorn fades into memory, we will be viewed as a wonderful asset to our community and a caring and considerate neighbor to Old Agoura.
