Healthcare is a fundamental right

Affordable health care is a human right. If you want to believe that the U.S. has the best care in the world, please check your facts. According to the World Health Organization’s ranking of the world’s healthy systems, we are No. 37 and yes, France is No. 1 with Saudi Arabia No. 26.

One difference with the U.S. private insurance system is that an individual with a catastrophic illness could lose his home and have to claim bankruptcy. In France you will not be denied insurance, but you will be denied insurance in the U.S. if you have an existing illness. The business of health insurance is to make a profit; therefore, the U.S. companies do not have any incentive to provide healthcare for seniors or disabled residents and can deny coverage as they please.

Some people do not want government meddling with our health care, but it is perfectly fine to have our government save automobile companies and investment firms. If you think insurance and pharmaceutical companies are not subsidized by the government, think again. All basic research comes from universities, which get grants from the government to do research and many private insurance companies have started by taking Medicare patients. Healthrelated research received the second largest amount of federal support behind only defenserelated research.

Yes, there will be flaws at the beginning by transforming the health care system to a single payer but considering the alternative of healthcare costs out of control, including the pharmaceutical companies overcharging, the need is there.
