Hawaiian hula history to be featured park program





The National Park Service in partnership with the Friends of Satwiwa will present a series of evening programs on Saturdays at the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa in Newbury Park. Admission and parking are free.


Upcoming events include:


From 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 25, Kumu Hula Etu Lopez from Kona, Hawaii will share Hawaiian culture and explain the significance of hula.


From 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 22, Kumu Hula Silvia Puanani Edgar and Hula Halau O Punaniha’aheo will share stories and songs of the Hawaiian people and the special "Kahiko" style dance.


From 5 to 9 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 29, program guest hosts Ted and Dennis Garcia will share stories, songs and dances of the Chumash people. There will be a potluck from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
