Guest opinion /// Five reasons to support California WaterFix

A simple truth: Our homes, businesses and communities in western Los Angeles County served by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District would not exist were it not for water from Northern California.

But the reliability of those supplies is at long-term risk.

This high quality Sierra Nevada supply flows through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. But, deteriorating environmental conditions have led to greater pumping restrictions. State and federal agencies are developing a plan to modernize this water system by building new intakes and a twin tunnel pipeline delivery system to reliably capture water and deliver it to millions of Californians.

The effort is known as California WaterFix. While we await the important details about how much this will cost and how various agencies intend to operate this modernized system, here are five benefits of California WaterFix:

1. It protects our largest water supply. The regional water delivery system serving Las Virgenes was designed to deliver water from Northern California.

2. It sustains our cities. Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and Westlake Village all rely on this supply, as do surrounding unincorporated areas.

3. It supports our local economy. Businesses such as the Cheesecake Factory, Guitar Center, Dole, Sprint and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation are here because there is a reliable water supply.

4. It allows us to survive droughts. California WaterFix is designed to capture water when it rains so it can be stored for our use during droughts.

5. It maintains our quality of life. We are blessed to live in a community with excellent local schools, parks and neighborhoods. Water makes it all possible.
