‘Great Backyard Bird Count’ coming

Wild Birds Unlimited of Woodland Hills is the local sponsor for the Great Backyard Bird Count to be conducted from Fri., Feb. 13 through Mon., Feb. 16. The event is a joint project of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society and serves to document the distribution and number of birds at the end of winter, before spring migrations begin.

"Everyone’s contribution is important. It doesn’t matter whether you identify, count and report five species that come to your backyard feeder or 75 species you may see during an outing at a wildlife refuge," said Jennie Ayers, co-owner of Wild Birds Unlimited. "All the data collected helps establish where the birds are, how many there are and how their movements over the winter may have changed. Data you collect helps tell science a lot about the health of our environment."

Individuals can count alone or as part of a group and may count on one or all of the four days of the event. Those interested may pick up checklists for California at Wild Birds Unlimited, 22110 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills.

After they fill out the checklists, they can report their findings on www.birdsource.org/gbbc or drop the checklists off at the store, which will report the findings for them.

Last year Californians participating in the count reported 257 individual species, from the common American crow to the rare yellow-headed blackbird, mitered parakeet and canyon towhee.
