Grant offered for residential native plant landscape makeover

The Conejo Valley Audubon Society is offering a $500 grant, in memory of Tom Halpin, for homeowners to change the plants in their yards to California native ones.

The society has experts who will make plant lists, help gardeners shop for them and then assist in the planting process as well. Homeowners who change their yards will receive a sign saying that they have a wildlife habitat.

To enter the grant competition, homeowners should explain why they would like to change their yard to a wildlife habitat.

The grant recipient must have at least 500 square feet of lawn available for replacement, be the owner of the property or have the owner’s consent, and be ready to plant in October or November. The property must be in the Conejo Valley, Simi Valley or Camarillo.

The winner must allow CVAS to post their name, along with before and after photos of the makeover, on its website and in publications and videos describing the makeover. The winner must also sign a waiver of liability.

The application deadline is Sept. 30.

Everyone who contacts the society regarding a yard change can receive lists and selection of plants, plans, planting and advice. Interested persons can give their name, address and email.
