Goodbye, Hayden,
we’ll miss you

Several hundred people gathered last Sunday to say goodbye to Hayden Finley (see story on page 2). It was a memorial service to celebrate his life.

It was different from most funerals because funerals are usually morbid affairs with lots of sobbing and sad songs. In contrast, at Hayden’s service, there was a substantial amount of laughter. He was, after all, a man who made others laugh and who wasn’t afraid to laugh at himself.

Hayden would have loved it.

There were tears too, of course, because he’ll be missed. This world doesn’t have enough Hayden Finleys and it’s a lesser place without him.

But we’re lucky to have known him. And after the grief is over, he’ll be remembered with smiles, not sadness.

Hayden cared deeply about others. He organized and volunteered for many worthy causes. At his service, one of the speakers quipped that it’s a good thing Hayden wasn’t a woman—he didn’t know how to say "no."

There are two kinds of members in clubs and organizations—those who actually work to keep the group alive and functioning—and those who are members in name only. Hayden Finley was in the first category.

He was a loving husband and father. He was a shining light. He was full of compassion and vitality.

We will miss Hayden Finley.
