Going green reduces runoff

The City of Calabasas says it has begun a citywide green streets project that will use trees and vegetation to reduce water runoff velocity, filter and clean water from roadways, and help reduce air pollution.

The project involves five locations, including a section of Calabasas Road between the 101 Freeway off-ramp and Mureau Road, and part of Malibu Hills Road near Lost Hills Road.

New center medians will be built on certain streets to act as biofiltration systems that will remove pollutants from incoming runoff and release cleaner water into the creeks and beaches.

Trees will be planted in the medians to provide green coverage for the road and reduce water runoff through absorption and filtering. The project will include an education campaign to inform residents about the benefits of planting trees in urban areas.
