Girl Scout Troop No. 1178, part of the Rancho Calabasas Service Unit, assembled more than 40 backpacks as a service project this summer.

Colette Rosario (troop co-leader) and Katie Rosario (troop secretary) led the effort to collect used backpacks, schools supplies and library books from Chaparral Elementary School.

The troop met this summer to sort, clean, organize and assemble the supplies and backpacks.

Each backpack was filled with an assortment of markers, crayons, pencils, scissors, rulers, pencil boxes, lunch boxes, paper, glue, binders and books.

The backpacks will be donated to needy women’s shelters in the area.

The goal of this project is to teach the girls to take on more of the project each year until they can do it on their own.

At first the leaders and parents did most of the work, but now the girls are helping to do many of the tasks related to preparing the backpacks for donation.

Ultimately the Scouts may choose to use this as a Silver or Gold Award project and complete the project entirely independently.
