The Ventura County Gilbert and Sullivan Repertoire Company opened its 2017-18 season with the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta “Patience or Bunthorne’s Bride” on Oct. 6 at the Theatre on the Hill, Hillcrest Center for the Arts, 403 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks.
The play runs through Oct. 22. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays.
The topsy-turvy farce examines the 19th century Aesthetic Movement, and the human affinity for the rich and famous.
Bunthorne, the fleshy poet, is in love with Patience, the milk maid, but she prefers Grosvenor, the idyllic poet.
All of the ladies of the town have deserted their fiancés in the Dragoon Guards to swoon over the bad poetry of the aesthetic sham, Bunthorne.
The play is a reminder that while following the latest fads and news about star athletes, actors, writers, politicians and fashion mavens may be fun, people are more than what lies on the surface and they should never take themselves too seriously.
Tickets are $15 to $25. To purchase tickets, call the box office at (805) 381-1246 or go to www.hillcrestarts.com.
