Gift drive will benefit local seniors

Home Instead Senior Care of Simi Valley is gearing up the annual Be a Santa to a Senior gift drive. The organization has teamed up with local community organizations, retailers and volunteers to collect, wrap and donate gifts to needy or lonely seniors in Ventura County.

Through Dec. 16, participating local nonprofit organizations will identify needy, orphaned or isolated seniors in the community and provide those names to Home Instead Senior Care.

Christmas trees will be placed in various business locations. The trees will feature ornaments with the first names of the seniors and their respective gifts requests. Shoppers can pick up an ornament, buy items on the list and return them unwrapped to the store, along with the ornament attached.

Volunteers and Home Instead staff will collect, wrap and distribute the gifts to the seniors.

A citywide gift-wrapping day will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tues., Dec. 18 at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi.

Last year, 196,500 seniors across North America received more than 300,000 gifts through the program.

To volunteer to help with the gift-wrapping day, call Laurie Reid at (805) 577-0926.
