Agoura’s Bernard, Westlake’s Smith lead local group that reaches state trackfinals


Local student-athletes have a date at state.

Idrees Bernard of Agoura High jumped his way into the CIF State Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Bernard, a junior, took first place in the boys’ triple jump during the Masters meet last weekend with a jump of 48.50 feet.

Thousand Oaks junior Luigi Colella also qualified for the state meet, winning the boys’ pole vault at Masters by clearing 15 feet, 10 inches.

Westlake sophomore Abigail Smith will double up at state, competing in the girls’ 100-meter dash and 4×100 relay.

Smith placed sixth in the 100 at Masters (11.71 seconds), and the Warriors finished fourth in the 4×100 (46.73 seconds). Sara Schwartz, Nicole Greenberg and Brooke Edell complement Smith on the 4×100 quartet.

Simi Valley junior Sarah Baxter will try to capture her third straight state title in the girls’ 3,200. Baxter won the distance race at Masters in 10:17.58.

Newbury Park freshman Kendall Mader advanced to the state meet after taking seventh in the girls’ discus (138-11).

Rio Mesa’s Raegan Nizdil and Oaks Christian’s Maya Hutchinson will compete in the girls’ high jump at state. Nizdil and Hutchinson both jumped 5-5 at Masters.

Junior Geraldynn Leaupepe will represent Camarillo at state in the girls’ shot put. The Scorpion finished eighth at Masters with a throw of 41-11.25.
