‘Fun-raiser’ is on the right track

Special to The Acorn

Hundreds with Sunday Morning Fever participated in the Disco Dash 5K Run and Free Concert presented by Los Angeles Sports and Fitness Magazine (LAS&F) to benefit Oak Park High School’s improvement fund for building a new track.

Runners began arriving Sunday in the parking lot of The Canyon in Agoura Hills at 6 a.m. to register for the 5K and a 1-mile fun run.

Blaring disco music, courtesy of 92.7 FM transported participants back to the wild 80s, accompanying them through the course and to the finish line. While on the course, photos were being taken of the runners courtesy of PhotoCrazy.com. Participants could view and purchase their photos that were displayed after the race.

Danish, bagels and various fruits were waiting for the runners as they returned. Immediately following the race was a health and fitness fair featuring local vendors such as Spectrum Club, Teague Pilates Studio, Ortho-Pro Physical Therapy and the new Bobacabana of Agoura serving its popular lime and cherry shaved ice.

An example of the services being offered at the health fair was spinal screenings by Jamie Culhane, DC, a family chiropractor who’s been practicing in Agoura for seven years. Total Woman Health Club of Westlake was giving out one week passes to its gym and discount coupons for the day spa.

Prizes and medals were being distributed to winners of the race. Participants were invited to dress in their favorite—or for some not so favorite—disco duds for a costume contest. Some of the prizes included a DVD player and Asics athletic shoes.

Danny Greenberg, founder of LAS&F Magazine said he picked the disco theme for this event because it stood out. Also, this is the 25th anniversary of "Saturday Night Fever" which was just released on DVD.

The disco theme went so well with one of the regular bands performing at The Canyon, Boogie Knights, who incidentally were the featured band at the Disco Dash concert on Sunday night at The Canyon.

Greenberg said he’d like to see this become an annual event to benefit OPHS track if funds are still needed or perhaps for another deserving charity in need of a fundraiser.
