Fun for families at Autry Museum

From July through September, families are invited to visit the Autry Museum of Western Heritage at 4700 Western Heritage Way in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park (across from the L.A. Zoo) to participate in a series of workshops, classes and special programs including the following.

From noon-3 p.m. on Fri., July 4 in the museum’s Mary Pickford Education Center, a family workshop will feature "July 4th Celebrations."

The afternoon begins with an "enthralling" lion dance by the Immortals Gung-Fu Lion Dancers at 12:30 p.m. followed at 2 p.m. by traditional Chinese dances performed by the Southern California Chinese Folk Dancers.

To celebrate Independence Day, "Applie Pie Fourth of July" by Janet S. Wong will be read. Throughout the afternoon, families can create Chinse zodiac animal puppets and special bookmarks using Chinese characters and participate in a sparkle art activity. The event combines a celebration of Chinese New Year with Fourth of July festivities on the same day.

The workshop is free with museum admission.

From 6:30 to10:30 p.m. Fri., July 25, the museum hosts a Family Night "Beach-Pajama Party" in the Showcase Gallery and Heritage Court.

Kids are invited to bring their pajamas to the Autry for the party where they will have the opportunity to examine, experiment and imagine the ocean at night as they explore the exhibition "Ocean View: The Depiction of Southern California Coastal Lifestyle."

The evening includes talking in "surf lingo," storytelling, singing, conducting exciting experiments and investigating the world of sand.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. An adult must accompany children. The Beach-Pajama Party is appropriate for children ages five and older. Cost is $10 per person for museum members; otherwise $15.
