Field trips for bird watchers

Malibu Lagoon Trips

The Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society hosts monthly Malibu Lagoon field trips, open to the public, at 8:30 and 10 a.m. on the fourth Sunday of every month.

The next dates are Aug. 26 and Sept. 23. There is no charge.

Attendees can bring binoculars if they have them or use a loaner.

The adult walk at 8:30 a.m. runs two to three hours and is for beginner and experienced.

The group meets at the metal-shaded viewing area next to the parking lot and begins by walking east toward the lagoon, checking the offshore rocks and the ocean. When lagoon outlet is closed the group continue east around the lagoon to Adamson House.

The children and parents walk 10 a.m. runs one hour and meets at the metal-shaded viewing area next to the parking lot.

The leaders are experienced with kids. Binoculars are available that children can use.

For Scout troops or other group of more than seven people, prior reservations must be made by calling Jean at (310) 472-7209 to make sure enough binoculars and docents are provided.

Malibu Lagoon is at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Cross Creek Road.

A parking machine was recently installed in the lagoon lot. Cost ranges from $3 for one hour to $12 for all day; $11 all day for seniors. Credit cards and annual passes are accepted.

For street parking, read the signs carefully. Lagoon parking in the shopping center lots is not permitted.

Conejo Valley Audubon

The Conejo Valley Audubon Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Mon., Sept. 10 at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology, 439 Calle San Pablo, Camarillo.

The program is the club’s annual “show and tell.” Members and guests will view photos, slides and presentations of birds encountered around the world in the past year.

The society also hosts field trips open to the public. Attendees should bring binoculars; loaners will be available for those who contact the trip leader in advance.

Sat., Sept. 1 at 8 a.m.: Hike at Santa Clara River Estuary led by Dee Lyon.

Sun., Sept. 9 at 8 a.m.: Hill Canyon/Santa Rosa Park. Linda Easter will lead.

Wed., Sept. 12 at 7:30 a.m.: Beginning bird walk at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa. This is a monthly event held the second Wednesday of each month led by Richard Armerding.

Sat., Sept. 22 Sat., Sept. 22 at Ventura Settling Ponds. This joint program with the Ventura Audubon Society will be led by Frank DeMartino.
